Lights/indicators
Well first of all Fred, replace that dodgy headlamp switch with a genuine O/E Mini headlamp switch. Their not at all difficult to find and not too expensive either: -
Mini Spares "Switch For Lights" link
Then next thing to do is to check that the main earth leads are in good shape and connected properly. You should have one that runs from the negative side of the battery (in the boot) which is bolted to the floor and one that runs from the clutch master cylinder bracket (on the left hand side of the engine bulkhead) to the engine via the top suspension steady arm.
If either of these 2 earth leads look worn, frayed or corroded, replace them immediately. More so if their not connected properly.
After that you could check the fuses and wiring connections and the main 4 fuse box should be rated as: -
1 1-2 35amp Brake Lights, Reverse Lights, Direction Indicators & Rear Screen Demister.
2 3-4 25amp Horn, Headlamp Flasher, Brake Failure Circuit & Radio Memory.
3 5-6 25amp Heater Blower Motor, Windscreen Wipers, Washer Motor & Instruments.
4 7-8 15amp Side & Tail Lights & Panel Lights.
1-2 These circuits only operate with the ignition switch at position "II".
5-6 These circuits only operate with the ignition switch at position "I" or "II".
The 4 Fuse box wiring colours are: -
White - Green
Brown - Purple
Light Green/White - Light Green/Orange
Red - Red/Green
Your Mini will also have In-Line Fuses situated behind it's air-filter on the bulkhead:
15amp - Purple/Orange Wire
Hazard Warning & Interior Lamps
15amp - Brown/Orange Wire
Dim-Dip Lighting
10amp - Blue/Orange Wire
Rear Fog Guard Lamps
So check these are correctly rated and in good order too.
After that you could also check the wiring connections behind the grille and those pesky bullet connectors: -
Earth is the Black wires
Sidelights are Red/Red with Green
Headlights are thick Blue with Red
Main Beam thick Blue with White
Hope that helps and a properly serviced Mini will be very reliable, but unfortunately many suffer bodged repairs and that's when the problems really start.
